Honorary Doctorate Conferral Ceremony for Dr. Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama
On November 19, 2018, Reitaku University awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, holding a special ceremony to mark this memorable event. The honorary doctoral degrees of our university are conferred on individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the advancement of learning and culture, to the development of nations and societies, and to the realization of human security, peace and happiness, in accordance with the founding spirit of our university. His Holiness took this occasion to give a memorial lecture, lasting an hour, in which he expounded on the significance of moral education and the necessity of compassion and love for all human beings.
His Holiness, in his visits to more than 50 countries, has always stressed the importance of peace, non-violence, and mutual understanding between different religions, and has highlighted our universal responsibility to care for the world and address its problems. He is the recipient of many awards, including honorary doctoral degrees from 23 universities across the globe. Here in Japan, though, Reitaku University is privileged to be the first such institution to confer a degree of this kind on His Holiness.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama kindly invited President Osamu Nakayama to sit beside him on the sofa while delivering his memorial lecture in a very friendly atmosphere.
