Reitaku Co-Hosts International Conference in India

0826シンポジウム (7)President Nakayama, Prof. Takeuchi, Prof. Inukai and their colleagues recently visited the University of Visva-Bharati, founded by Sir Rabindranath Tagore, in Shantiniketan, India.

 This year 2016 is significant for both Visva-Bharati and Reitaku; as well as being the 100th anniversary of Tagore’s first visit to Japan, it also marks the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Chikuro Hiroike, the founder of Reitaku University.

0826シンポジウム (6) In the course of a keynote address on August 25th, President Nakayama expressed his gratitude to Prof. Kailash Pattanaik, Principal, Prof. Swapan Kumar Dutta, Vice Chancellor, their distinguished colleagues, and staff members at the University of Visva-Bharati, for their most hospitable welcome. Prof. Takeuchi gave a lecture on “The Ideas of Rabindranath Tagore and Chikuro Hiroike on Education”.

 Following on from this, on August 26th and 27th the Department of Japanese at Visva-Bharati and Reitaku University, with the generous support of the Japan Foundation, co-hosted an International Conference. On the 26th, President Nakayama gave a lecture entitled “The Concept of Nature(shizen) Revealed in the Japanese Garden”, while Prof. Inukai offered a presentation on “The Origins of the Japanese Ethic: Prince Shotoku’s Seventeen-Article Moral Constitution”.

 Reitaku and Visva-Bharati will commence publication of an academic journal entitled “Tagore and Japan” in the next few years.
