President Nakayama is honoured with an invitation to the inaugural conference of the Jubilee Centre, Birmingham University, England

Presentation of President Nakayama

President Nakayama and Professor Horiuchi were delighted and honoured to be asked to take part, in company with other distinguished scholars, in an international two-day inaugural conference hosted by The Jubilee Centre for Character and Values on 14th and 15th December 2012 at Winterbourne House, Birmingham University. Its theme was “Character and Public Policy: Educating for an Ethical Life,” and President Nakayama read a paper entitled “Globalization and the Need to Reconstruct Moral Education in Higher Education.”

The Jubilee Centre is a pioneering interdisciplinary research centre whose focus of concern is character, virtues and values, and how to advance them in the interests of human flourishing. It promotes a moral concept of character in the context of exploring the importance of virtue in public and professional life in the belief that “central to the moral world is the development of virtues – that is, the dispositions that characterise a distinctly human form of life and which influence how we think and act in the particular situations.” Since Reitaku’s CMED shares this core concern and this core belief, it and the Jubilee Centre have established a partnership to deepen our understanding of character and its moral values, as well as to cooperate academically and educationally with one other in this important field. Further information about the centre and its activities (including the above conference), newsletters and so forth, is available on its website: http://www.jubileecentre.ac.uk/355/about-the-centre.
